The Pieter Bruegel Series

Jeff Winslow is working on a short series of paintings taken directly from the drawings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Drawing primarily from Bruegel's 7 Deadly Sins and 7 Great Virtues, Winslow feels these images take on a strangely urgent and poignant commentary of our times.

Bruegel's drawing "JUSTICE", was done without a hint of irony. It is a straightforward statement that torturing and executing criminals (terrorists?) is not only a good thing, but one of the 7 Great Virtues.

This message from our cultural past juxtaposed with the current debate on torture makes this debate all the more visceral and chilling.

Winslow believes the other images also provoke strange and interesting interpretations , as the artist stated "I wanted to pluck these images from the 16th century and put them in the context of today's world."

"By adding a vibrant and contemporary color palette, I hope to have people look at these magnificent images with fresh eyes."
