The Almost Human Series From political campaigns and TV commercials, to the neatly manicured members of a homeowners association, there is a tightly controlled manufacturing of image throughout our culture. Looking for cracks in this unified front, where truths about our cultural attitudes come leaking out is the impetus behind this series of photographs. Particularly the attitudes of both society and the individual as to the roles, nature and place of women in our culture. For years Jeff Winslow has focused his camera on the decidedly low-brow store fronts of downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood in search of this leakage. Finding images that are funny, and at other times disturbing in their honesty, "I avoid the high end stores in Beverly Hills where every inch of the storefront window is carefully planned and designed. I prefer the storefront where the owner's nephew was given $20 and an hour to create the entire window display."
